The Forgotten Fortress, ‘La forteresse oubliee’

The Dordogne has the highest concentration of châteaux in France. Known as the land of a thousand and one castles, a château often dominates this fascinating landscape.  Our itinerary includes a visit to the Château de Commarque which is undoubtedly the finest ruin in the region.

Day 1: 10km undulating rolling hills

The walk starts from Sireuil a pretty little village on the edge of the Beune Valley. Our destination is the Château de Commarque an enigma among castles in the region. The exact origins of the château are unknown, and its inaccessible location in a tree lined valley allowed it to slowly becoming buried in silt and dirt over the centuries. In the last few years archaeologists have been reclaiming the castle from the countryside, before it disappeared altogether. We will picnic at the site allowing time to explore its secrets and enjoy the romance and sense of mystery that is experienced in this forgotten valley. Learn more
