Lascaux Caves
This area is home to the most famous of all caves-Lascaux. Lascaux was discovered in 1944 by four local boys looking for their dog which disappeared down a hole. After squeezing through the opening they were amazed to find themselves in a vast underground cave covered in paintings of hunting scenes. The cave paintings were verified by experts as dating from prehistoric times and the cave was opened to the public from 1948. Due to the large number of visitors the paintings began to deteriorate and the caves were closed to the public in 1963. It took another 15 years for Lascaux 11 an exact copy of the caves to be completed 200 metres from the original site. A visit to the cave is a must to get the feel of what prehistoric man with his limited resources achieved artistically. Even though it is a reproduction Lascaux 11 will still give you goosebumps!
